The origin & chronology

The journey from a crude video concept to a precision-machined 2026 luxury board. The timeline below establishes continuous development, structural evolution, and international prior art.

Concept Genesis

During the pandemic, the kids and I were looking for fun, challenging activities that didn't involve a screen. Our craving for tactile experiences fueled our creativity and inspired us to build prototypes of a game I had dreamed up as a young boy. The result is Move or Shoot. A game you can touch, shared with friends & family without needing electricity or a large space.

Equal parts strategy, skill, and chance, it promotes motor skills and brain activity while delivering endless fun. Inspire your mind, reduce screen time, and combine strategic moves with flipping, sliding, and skipping the disc. Capture other players, win them back, block, and ricochet. This meditative competition places action against restraint—calming yet exhilarating. Incorporating geometry, open space, and time, it unleashes the imagination and melts away stress.

Play inside or out. Imagine kids gathering in the park with their own sets, sharing trick shots until the sun goes down.

Development Timeline

1. The Birth of an Idea (Age ~12-13) After playing Subbuteo at a friend's house, the inspiration struck: a tabletop basketball game driven by statistics. This hand-drawn "Free Throw Chart" proves the concept was born long before 2020.
Hand-drawn character stat sheet on lined paper
1b. The Character Sheet Early RPG-style tracking mechanics. The seeds of "Speed Ratings" and player strengths were sown here.
Raw pegboard with wooden pegs and black puck, the very first pre-straction iteration
2. Pre-Straction Prototype The earliest captured raw prototype. Simple wooden pegboard with wooden pegs and a black puck. The inception of the physical board.
Pencil-drawn layout on pegboard with numbered early pegs
3. Early Peg & Speed Mechanics Penciling out the lines and establishing the nature of early pegs and 'speed'.
Early unpainted prototype sitting next to a Crokinole board
4. Straction 1 (Early Unpainted Phase) The earliest uncovered prototype sitting side-by-side with a traditional Crokinole board, showing the physical and mechanical inspiration for the game.

5. Shellacing Traction 1 The kids helping apply a clear shellac resin to the freshly painted traction 1 board.

7. Straction 1 (The Ad) The first visual conceptualization of the game as a basketball court. The "Straction" ad graphic shows the early thought process for the aesthetic.
The final polished Straction basketball court render
8. Straction Final The polished, final visualization of the Straction basketball court concept.

10. The First Move or Shoot Prototype Early Ball and surface testing. Note it has 2 goals (holes). Here it is just the board. In the next one, it has the pegs and balls integrated but same prototype.
The first physical boxed version of the game
11. First Physical Boxed The first physical boxed iteration of the game.
Painted board with pink and blue 3D printed pegs
12. Move or Shoot Prototype The first major physical prototype in action. The board is painted to define the field and end zones, using early 3D-printed pegs and an orange puck.
Handwritten yellow index card detailing rough game rules
13. Rules Development Handwritten mechanics on a yellow index card. The foundational rules of "Move" and "Shoot" are being codified.
Pink slip of paper with hand-drawn diagrams
13b. Mechanics Diagrams Hand-drawn diagrams mapping movement zones and speed mechanics.
Index card where the name Move or Shoot and peg movement were defined
13c. The Name & Movement The exact index card where the name "Move or Shoot" and the numeric peg movement mechanic were conceptualized.
3D render of the boxed prototype with corner pieces and chutes
14. Boxed Set Render A 3D visualization of the boxed prototype, featuring the wooden frame and the corner return mechanism.
15. 2021 Boxed Board Playtest Early gameplay testing on a boxed prototype, demonstrating the integration of movement and shooting mechanics in real-time.
Boxed version with 3D printed branded corners and chutes
16. Branded Corners & Chutes The boxed version features 3D-printed, branded corners and the ball return chutes.

17. Refined Box (10 Made) A refined box version given to family to playtest. A limited run of 10 were made.
Early boxed version with score keeper and bluetooth speaker built into the side
18. Boxed with Speaker & Score Keeper An early boxed version featuring a built-in bluetooth speaker and a score keeper.
Green board with the early rules of play sheet
19. Machined Boxed with Rules An alternate machined boxed version featuring the early "Rules of Play" sheet.

20. Machined Green Board (CU) The signature 529-hole grid realized in green. This board was critical for testing the physical feel of the numbered speed pegs, defining the movement mechanics, designing the capture rules, and codifying the peg speed mechanics.
Another boxed version, in black - top down
21. Boxed Versions Another boxed version, in black. These two angles show the sleek dark aesthetic of the prototype.
Flat machined board from 2023 with swivel and crease
22. 2023 Flat Machined (Swivel) The flat kind machined by a colleague using a 3D laser cutter. Not boxed, just the board. The central swivel was introduced here, and we established the crease where there were no spaces to move (like soccer).

23. 2023 Flat 3D Render The 3D rendering of that same 2023 flat machined prototype.

The manifesto

“During the pandemic, the kids and I were looking for fun and challenging activities that didn't involve a screen. The craving for tactile, really fuelled our creativity and it inspired us to begin building prototypes of a game that I had originally conceived of when I was just a young boy. What we found, is what makes you want to play the game over and again, is the way it feels.”

The laws of nature

Chance, geometry, angles, open space, matter & time. Combine this with the human mind, and the combinations are endless. A meditative competition that places action against restraint, and is both calming and exhilarating.

A game for the future

Inspire the mind while reducing screen time. Combine strategic positioning with the physical skill of flipping, sliding, and skipping the puck. Capture opponents, reclaim your pieces, block, and ricochet. Unplug, engage your imagination, and let your stresses melt away.

Move or Shoot... the choice is yours.

"The dinner table where families gather to eat and share ideas. Where we talk about life and values. We want Move or Shoot to be right in the middle of that table. With the radio on and the internet unplugged."
